Roller Blinds in a High Moisture Environment
Hygiene and cleaning considerations
Will the blind be in a high moisture environment, like a kitchen or bathroom? Will the blind get dirty or be subject to spills and splashes? Is infection or bacteria control important?
Anti-bacterial fabrics
Antibacterial roller blind fabrics are treated with a coating which will prohibit the growth of bacteria, fungi, mould and mildew. Antibacterial fabrics are used extensively in hospitals, nurseries and care homes.
Wipeable fabrics
Some roller blind fabrics are suitable for cleaning by wiping with a damp cloth. These fabrics work well for kitchen roller blinds due to the constant potential for food spills and stains.
Moisture resistant & waterproof fabrics
Moisture resistant and waterproof roller blind fabrics resist moisture more than conventional fabrics and are suitable for installation in areas of high moisture content or where the blind might be subject to splashes such as in bathrooms and kitchens. Bathroom roller blinds in particular benefit from this type of fabric. As the roller blind fabric is water resistant it will be able to be cleaned with a damp cloth.
Washable fabrics
Manufacturers will note that some fabrics are suitable for washing in a washing machine. However it would not be practical to wash a roller blind fabric in this way and this type of cleaning should only be recommended for cleaning the vanes of certain vertical blinds.
